West Bengal is a leading state in the eastern Region o India. Rich in culture, heritage, natural bounty and industry, Bengal is a key player in India’s surge to become a world power often described as a Gateway State The state geographical location truly makes it a gateway to the North eastern region of India and the entire Asia pacific belf.
The Land
West Bengal is on the eastern bottleneck of India stretching from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. The state has a total area of 88752 square kilometers ( 34,267 sq.km ) The Darjeeling Himalayan Hill region in the northern extreme region from the plans which in turn transits into the Ganges delta toward the south The Rarh region intervenes between the Ganges delta in the east and the western plateau an high lands. The coastal region is on the extreme south while the ‘Sunder ban mangrove forests from a remarkable geographical land mark at the Ganges delta.
Owing to the varying altitude from the Himalayas to the coastal plan, the flora and fauna of the state is diverse. Forests make up 14% of the geographical area of West Bengal protected forests cover 4% of the state area. Part of the worl’d largest mangrove forest Sunderbans is located in southern West Bengal.
The varied land is the home to varied mix of people of Proto-Australian, Negroid, Armenians, Sumerians, Mongoloids and Indo – Aryan origins.
